"Have ... Have I been asleep?"
Kaiya was the sister of the Last Emperor of the Holy Ioxian Empire. She died as a child, after having her personality recorded at the Withering Palace 367 years ago. She had an imperious manner despite her age, expected anyone speaking to her to know who she was, and was easily provoked to threaten to have someone killed. The Last Emperor must have loved her very much, because he chose to take her recording with him into exile on the Hideout Moon.
If she was ill, she apparently did not know that, nor what would happen at the Withering Palace, not even recognizing the word "recording." She thinks she must be in the "Orangery" there, but if one ever existed, it is long dead, as the moon where the Withering Palace was built is now completely waterless and uninhabitable.
Aliya finds the Rebeske foil containing her recording hidden in the clay statuette of Kibenya in the shrine on the Hideout Moon. After finding the holographic projector in the Emperor's Graveyard, if she puts it on the one memorial marker that still has power and puts the foil in the marker niche, Kaiya's head appears and begina speaking. Her conversation with Aliya is brief, lasting only until the power fails, but can go in several directions and will help direct Aliya to the Withering Palace, which she will describe when asked as "The Palace of Mechanicals." The hologram is a robot head, like all recordings of the dead, so we do not know what she looked like or how old she was when recorded, but Aliya does note that she speaks "with the voice of a child."
